Microsoft has updated the support page for Nokia devices, Lumia and simple phones, where it announced the exclusion of Store for devices from Widnows Phone 8.1. We find out when exactly this will happen, what devices are covered and what will happen with previously downloaded applications. Let's start, however, with the disabling of the Windows Phone Store itself.
Support for the Widnows Phone 8.1 system ended on July 11, 2017However, the App Store remains functional to date. This will change on December 16, 2019, when it closes. After this date, both Lumia phones with WP 8.1 and applications downloaded from the Store will continue to work. However, some functionalities will be reduced, namely:
- Users will no longer be able to download additional applications to the phone. They should download all desired applications before December 16.
- Application functionality may degrade as their updates are no longer available in the Store. Users can contact the publishers of the application if they have questions.
- You will not be able to reinstall the application. If the user removes the application from the phone, it cannot be restored. This also includes resetting the phone and using the Windows Device Recovery Tool (WDRT), during which applications are deleted. Users should consider this when deciding to reset the device or use WDRT after December 16.
Selected models of Lumia smartphones can be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile. However, you should know that all older versions are no longer supported, and the last one will lose support at the end of 2019, exactly 6 days before closing the Windows Phone Store. The system will no longer be updated, but its store will remain operational for some (indefinite) period. The following phones are eligible for the upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile:
- Microsoft Lumia 430
- Microsoft Lumia 435
- Microsoft Lumia 532
- Microsoft Lumia 535
- Microsoft Lumia 540
- Nokia Lumia 635 (only variant with 1GB RAM)
- Nokia Lumia 636
- Nokia Lumia 638
- Microsoft Lumia 640
- Microsoft Lumia 640 XL
- Nokia Lumia 730
- Nokia Lumia 735
- Nokia Lumia 830
- Nokia Lumia 929
- Nokia Lumia Icon
- Nokia Lumia 930
- Nokia Lumia 1520
Windows Phone and Windows Mobile are considered practically dead. The share of active devices with these systems on the mobile market does not exceed 0.01% and it is practically a matter of time before it falls to zero. If fans of "Mobile Windows" do not get convinced to Android or iOS before, then the last factor will probably be the device's life. Of course, we remember that Nokia phones have been indestructible and can remain functional even after 20 years of use, but the world of smartphones is unfortunately governed by other laws. It is difficult to find a smartphone today that would not fall apart after 4-5 years of use.
Fans of Microsoft technology will see the reactivation of the giant's mobile device line next year, although not under the Lumia brand, but on the Surface. However, they do not have much in common with Windows Phone. Surface Neo it will be released with Windows 10X but without the phone function. Surface Duo it is a phone, but with Android.
